;Trimming a tree is very important especially for safety reasons. Here on Long Island we have many trees, From spruce tree's, to pine, to weeping willows and everything else in between. Especially since L.I. is subject to the never ending nor'easter, you need to access your tree situation on your property and plan accordingly.
Do you have heavy branches that extend over your roof? This itself may not be and issue. It is only an issue to where it falls. That being said a falling branch, especially when heavy, can cause some shingle damage. It may be completely impractical though for thorough tree trimming if you are going to create an complete eyesore in the process.
If the branches are just extending over a sensitive structure such as solar panels, with effective tree pruning, you can lessen the possibility of extensive damage such a branch falls on it.
Also there is a need to look for weak branches. This can occur due to age, or stress from previous seasons. An arborist will be able to specify which tree branches need to go.
Depending on how high up those branches are will determine the type of tree trimming that occur towards the top.
The brings the next topic, is do you choose tree topping or crown reduction
